For those not familiar, Midwest Airlines is now known as Frontier Airlines after a merger that happened earlier in 2010. But this article will only address Midwest because they are the subject of our article. Midwest is a little airline and only has around 2400 people working for it and it caters mostly to people who travel for business and pleasure. Milwaukee Wisconsin (and General Billy Mitchell Airfield) is its primary hub. Nonstop trips to Costa Rica, the US and Mexico are Midwest's forte. The airline flies into and out of cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and Phoenix. There is much more to this company that you can learn.

Transitioning the various programs unique to each company during a merger can become quite complex. Frequent flyers on Midwest enjoy the Midwest Miles Mastercard service they provide customers. The reality of it is that passengers like earning extra points by using their Midwest Miles Card for purchases or travel.

But there is nothing to worry about with their accumulated miles. If you already have this card you will continue to earn miles for card purchases. By the end of 2010 Midwest Miles cardholders will have been transferred to a Frontier Mastercard and the program will continue. Barclay's Bank, the issuer of both of these airlines Mastercard programs will make the transition go without falter. A very common worry among people who fly regularly is how many things they are allowed to bring into the plane's seating area. Midwest/Frontier allows passengers to bring one item of carryon luggage and one personal item as well. The basic definition of a personal item in this situation is something like a laptop, smaller tote bag, hand bag or other item of about that size. Yes, there are some actual specifications for carry on items but, usually, they need to either fit underneath one of the seats on the plane or inside of one of the overhead compartments. Because security in the US is very strict, there are some limits to what can and cannot be brought onto the aircraft. These rules are put in place by the TSA and there is a full list of the restrictions on the TSA's main website.

You will find that Midwest does not offer first class seating, and that is for a good reason. Their goal is to keep their prices affordable so they only offer a single kind of seating class to every passenger. This is actually not so unusual with the smaller air carriers. You should know this already but the high price of operations forces most airlines to operate within a very narrow profit margin. No matter what size the airline is, it is going to look for ways to cut down on costs as much as they can. Obviously if they do that, they try to pass on those savings to the passengers. That is also not unusual due to the highly competitive nature of the airline industry. You do, however have the STRETCH option that buys you five more inches of leg room.

What can be expected once the merger between Midwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines is complete is a more powerful and healthy medium size regional carrier. What great news to deliver to their customers, their employees and the general public too.

It isn't always this easy to complete a merger without a huge burden on other carriers who would have to absorb the increase in travelers if one airline went away. It typically requires a tremendous logistical infrastructure to absorb this increase. So we are thankful for the good health of both airlines especially during this merger.
